Proper Spending > Buying and Spending Habits > Avoiding Temptation (1)
Impulse buying can be a major source of financial distress. Learning to control impulse buying and spending habits can drastically reduce your monthly expenses.
An effective way to limit spending is to
decrease the exposure to the stimuli that create our false need (impulse) for
discretionary products and services. Following are measures that you can take
to reduce your exposure to artificially created impulses:
- Reduce your exposure to television commercials and home shopping programs
- Do not become consumed by Internet retail sites
- Limit your exposure to magazine advertising or mail order catalogs
- Do not go shopping out of boredom or as a means of providing entertainment, shop with a purpose
- Limit exposure to individuals who exhibit spending behavior that you are trying to avoid
- Limit exposure to individuals who are critical of your desire to get out of debt
