  • Impulse items such as candy, magazines and nick-knack items are strategically sold at the check out counter where monetary transactions are conducted.
  • Necessities such as milk, eggs, and bread are strategically placed at the back corner of the store opposite the entrance so consumers must walk past all of the discretionary goods that they do not necessarily need.
  • Bakeries and delicatessens are often placed in the front of stores to entice the consumers with pleasant smells and sites.
  • Department stores place elaborately decorated fragrance counters at the entrance of stores to attract customers to the tempting smells and sites.
  • Electronics stores place their large “testable” merchandise at the front of the store while items that are necessary to make them work such as accessories, batteries, and parts are placed in the back. This causes the consumer to focus on their “desire” for the merchandise and fail to realize the other cost of enabling them to work.
  • Car dealers are often insistent that you test-drive a vehicle before they talk any further to you.
