Bid low to start.

When you first engage in negotiations with creditors, start low on your settlement figure. If you overbid on the settlement offer, you may cost yourself a lot of money. Settling is often a see-saw battle of wills that takes some time. You may have to come back to the bargaining table with several settlement offers before finally coming to an agreement with the creditor.
